Hairy frogfish, also known as striated frogfish, is a strange and unique marine fish. Despite their rough appearance, they attract observers because of their lightning-fast ability to catch prey, taking only 1/6,000 of a second.
With its body covered with hair-like spines, hairy frogfish have the ability to camouflage in the marine environment by changing color. They often occur in warm waters around the world and rarely swim, instead, they jump by sucking water through their mouths and expelling it through the gill slits on the back of their legs.
The hairy frogfish’s stomach is flexible, allowing them to swallow whole prey twice their size. This furry fish also has the ability to change color to blend in with the environment, and sometimes, it seems like it is “walking” on the sand.
Known as one of the strangest and most difficult to find marine fish, hairy frogfish is interesting to scientists and marine animal lovers. The ability to open its mouth 12 times its normal size when attacking is one of the outstanding and unique features of this fish in the marine world.
