TPO – Vietnam is one of the countries with many beautiful coral reefs with high biodiversity. Let’s admire the beautiful photos of corals at the bottom of our country’s sea through the lens of Dr. Dang Do Hung Viet, an expert in ecology and marine environment.
Coral reefs are the ocean’s most diverse ecosystems, compared to tropical forests at the bottom of the sea. Vietnam’s coral reefs are widely distributed from North to South with an area of more than 1100km2 with about 400 species of hard coral belonging to 79 varieties.
According to experts, the coral community in Vietnam can be compared to the most diverse coral areas in the world.
According to the Institute of Oceanography, the largest coral area and greatest biodiversity are recorded in the Central and Southern waters. Some places have very beautiful coral reefs such as Ly Son, Binh Dinh, Con Dao, and Cu Lao Cham. Nha Trang used to have beautiful coral reefs at Hon Mun Nature Reserve. However, recently, the coral reef here has been seriously destroyed.
Coral reefs are home to a very rich biodiversity and are home to many marine species.
Coral reef ecosystems have a very complex structure and are very sensitive to environmental threats. In Vietnam recently, many coral reefs have been seriously degraded.
Causes of coral reef degradation in Vietnam include both natural and artificial causes.
Coral reefs around the world, including Vietnam, are facing many natural threats such as ocean change leading to warming temperatures and ocean acidification.
However, according to experts, human impacts are the main cause leading to the degradation of many coral reefs in Vietnam. Some main causes include coral exploitation, overfishing, tourism, leveling, and dredging.
Experts say that it is time to implement strict protection measures for Vietnam’s precious coral areas.
