Blanket octopuses with giant membranes that make them like witches fluttering in the mysterious ocean, are one of the strange and rare creatures in the world.
The blanket octopus has the scientific name Tremoctopus, possessing many tentacles, including 2 unusually long tentacles attached to it, a membrane.
Tremoctopus has three hearts. Their beak is shaped like a parrot’s beak.
This octopus has venom in its saliva but is not strong enough to cause death. They can change skin color and texture easily and quickly.
A special feature of the blanket octopus is that the female has a giant membrane. When threatened, they will spread their membranes to defend themselves and measure their size against their opponents. Females of this species are quite large, weighing about 10 kg and can stretch up to 2m, while males are only about 2.5 cm in size, weighing 0.25g.
Despite their small size, male octopuses are very aggressive. They often fight fiercely, even aiming to tear off their rival’s semen secretions in order to gain the right to mate. Only the winning male has access to the female.
Each time a female is pregnant, she can lay up to 10,000 eggs, but very few baby octopuses survive.
When blanket octopuses feel threatened, they will spread their membranes to defend themselves and measure the size of their opponents.
Blanket octopuses prefer warm waters in the Pacific Ocean and until now people have had very few opportunities to admire and learn about them.
