Coco de Mer (sea coconut, also known as palm) is a plant belonging to the Areca family and is also the only species of the genus Lodoicea. This is the rarest and most expensive coconut in the world. Each Coco de Mer coconut costs an average of about 300 pounds (about 385 USD).
The Coco de mer tree grows very tall, can reach up to 25-34m, with fan-shaped leaves about 7-10m long and about 4.5m wide. This type of coconut only grows on Praslin and Curieuse islands in the Seychelles island nation, so it is very rare.
In the world, this type of coconut is very famous thanks to its large size and quite sensitive shape, exactly like a woman’s buttocks. The Coco de mer fruit holds the record for being the largest and heaviest fruit in the world. On average, a coconut weighs about 23 to 30kg and has a diameter of 30-40cm.
This coconut can also be eaten and drunk, its coconut pulp and coconut water both have a sweet taste. This type of coconut also takes a long time to grow. Each tree takes about 40 years to grow to maturity and takes up to 5-10 years to bear fruit.
Coco de Mer fruit is considered a “treasure of Seychelles” and is very rare, so tourists coming here still accept to spend a large amount of money to own it.
Another interesting thing is that the male flowers and coconut fruits of this tree both have sensitive shapes.
Because it is so heavy, when it falls into the sea, the Coco de mer fruit does not float but sinks to the bottom of the sea. Much later, when the shell has been decomposed by sea water, its seeds can float to the surface and drift to different regions. Because at this time, the seeds do not have nutrients to sustain themselves, so when they drift to new land they rot and cannot germinate.
