Dragonflies are popular and familiar insects to many Vietnamese people, especially in rural areas. Dragonflies belong to the group of carnivorous insects, they often fly around to hunt for other smaller insects, even other dragonflies.
Neurobasis chinensis species
This is one of the most popular dragonfly species in Vietnam. Their front wings are pale yellow and transparent. The hind wings are blue and dark blue. The body of this dragonfly is covered with a green color that helps them easily “stealth” into the leaves near the stream to avoid enemies.
Matrona basilaris Selys
This dragonfly has an iridescent blue body. The first half of their wings are dark blue, the remaining base is bright blue. This species of dragonfly is mainly distributed in northern mountainous areas such as Lang Son (Loc Binh), Vinh Phuc (Tam Dao), Cao Bang (Thong Khanh), Hoa Binh (Thuong Tien, Kim Boi) and Phu Tho (Xuan Son).
Vestalis gracilis
The body of this dragonfly is blue and its wings often reflect blue, helping them easily hide in foliage. They usually only fly out when sunlight shines on them. This Vestalis gracilis dragonfly is found mainly in Southeast Asia and southern China.
Calopteryx coomani
This is a dragonfly with a large body size, with a wingspan and body length of over 100 mm. The wings of the coomani species are dark blue and large and strong. Their habitat is usually near streams in mountainous areas.
Vestalis miao
The characteristic feature of this dragonfly species is the white color at the tip of the male’s tail and the characteristic orange wings when molting, then transparent and colorless when mature. In Vietnam, this dragonfly species was discovered in Huu Lien Nature Reserve (Lang Son) and Xuan Son National Park (Phu Tho).
Libellago lineata
This Vietnamese dragonfly species only lives in small streams or swamps. The Libellago lineata species stands out with striped scales along its green body mixed with black. Their tails are long and have a few red dots.
Rhinocypha arguta Hämäläinen & Divasiri
The recognizable characteristics of this dragonfly species are the brick red color on the upper surface of the abdominal segments, black thorax with alternating yellow stripes. They were discovered in Cuc Phuong national park (Ninh Binh) and Xuan Son (Phu Tho).
Species Euphaea masoni Selys
This species of dragonfly is quite common in mountainous areas. They have strong, dark blue wings. The hind wing has an iridescent blue patch on the outside, the inner edge is red.
Orolestes Selysi McLachLan
This species of dragonfly belongs to the group of damselflies. They often spread their wings when hanging on tree branches near streams.
Neurothemis fluvia
Dragonflies mainly live on logs or tree trunks in moist forests. Their bodies when mature are extremely striking brick red, and the tip of each wing is impressively transparent.
