In 1887, this fairy tale world was first discovered by Tane Tinorau – a Maori chief and Fred Mace – a British investigator. Both of them were very surprised to discover a shimmering world underground. Even though they knew about the existence of underground caves, they never expected to see such a wonderful scene. come like that. After discovering this secret, they built a raft together and went deep into exploring the cave. The deeper you go inside, the more beauty is discovered, from then on everyone knows about the existence of this magical world. The limestone floors formed in the cave became shimmering and magical thanks to the illumination of the fireflies, which brought an appeal to the patriarch and he once again went to explore the cave himself, this time he discovered another cave entrance located above the cave, which is also the entrance used today.

Immediately after discovery, in 1889, patriarch Tane Tinirau began opening the cave to welcome tourists to visit. Thanks in part to that income, he and his wife had a significant amount of expenses to start a business. And it was not until 1906 that the New Zealand government took over management of the cave. However, the patriarch’s wife and husband will still receive a percentage of the revenue and participate in the management, development and protection of the cave.
