Thanks to its strange shape and aromatic taste, finger lemons have become the most expensive lemons in the world with prices of at least 280 USD/kg.
According to the Los Angeles Times, finger lime has the scientific name Microcitrus australasica. This is one of six native Australian lemon species, growing in eastern coastal rain forests.
Finger limes have different characteristics compared to other citrus varieties, such as very small leaves and flowers. In 1915, scientist Walter T. Swingle classified this lemon and its close relatives into a separate genus, called Microcitrus.
The height of the finger lemon tree is about 2 – 7m. The flowers are white with petals 6 – 9mm long. The cylindrical fruit looks a bit like a cucumber, 4 – 8cm long. The fruit’s skin is thin, with many different colors such as purple red, dark blue, most commonly green, light red. The oil extracted from the peel is quite fragrant, containing isomenthone found in mint.
Lemon shrimp are white-green or light pink in color, shaped exactly like salmon eggs.
The characteristic that makes lemons hundreds of times more expensive than regular lemons lies in its flavor. Lemon peel has a scent that combines yellow lemon and regular lemon, creating a spice that helps increase the appeal of seafood dishes.
