This giant stingray is often found in rivers in Southeast Asia. This is one of the largest freshwater fish in the world with a weight of 500 – 600kg. This species of ray has an oval shape and is usually about 2 meters long, with an elongated tail with many serrated teeth.
This species of stingray became widely known in 2006 when it used its poisonous tail to kill famous Australian naturalist – Steve Irwin. According to scientists, this species has existed since the Jurassic period, about 100 million years ago.
Currently, this species is threatened with extinction when faced with overfishing and shrinking habitat. In many Southeast Asian countries, especially Thailand, it is necessary to take measures to protect this species of stingray.
