A farmer in Israel broke a record when he harvested the world’s heaviest strawberry, about 24 times larger than the average.
Ariel Chahi, living with her family in Israel, owns a large livestock farm. Recently, Ariel Chahi was recognized by Guinness World Records for growing the heaviest strawberry in the world.
The juicy red strawberry that Ariel Chahi harvested weighed about 289 grams, had a diameter of 34 cm, about 24 times the average size of a strawberry.
The giant “monster” that Ariel Chahi grew belongs to the Ilan strawberry variety, the first large-sized strawberry variety created by Dr. Nir Dai.
According to Dr. Nir Dai, the weather in late January and early February is especially cold, strawberry plants planted during this period will grow 45 days slower from flowering than fruits planted in other seasons.
This gives the fruit a chance to grow larger in size until it is fully ripe. This year the weather is cold, Ariel Chahi’s farm has four unusually large strawberries, but this is the largest strawberry of them all.
Previously, the record for the world’s heaviest strawberry was 250 grams, belonging to Japanese farmer Koji Nakao in Fukuoka in 2015. The strawberry is nearly 8cm tall, about 12cm long, and 25-30cm in circumference. The giant strawberry that Mr. Nakao planted is a Japanese domestic variety called Amaou.
