Every day, kingfishers must eat food (fish) equivalent to their body weight to survive, so they are not “picky eaters”.
Paul Richards, a retired wildlife conservation officer, confirmed this after capturing a panoramic view of kingfishers hunting at the Cleddau estuary, Southwest Wales (UK).
Richards was surprised when in just two hours, a female kingfisher caught and ate 6 different prey including flatfish, goby, shrimp, mullet, mussels, and sea bass.
Every week, Richards spent more than 30 hours observing this bird and discovered that the subject caught fish 3 times a day, each time catching 4 or 5 different fish. This proves that kingfishers, like us, like to have many dishes in each meal.
