Recently, users on social networks have been buzzing about a strange fruit that most of us have never seen or heard.
In the shared image, it can be seen that when it was still hanging from the tree, this fruit looked like a mango, but had purple skin.
When I took a knife to cut it open, I was extremely surprised because the inside looked like the intestines of a banana. If you continue to use a knife to cut into small pieces, you can see a lot of black seeds, just like banana seeds.
According to research, this is actually not a mango, nor is it a banana. It is Akebi purple grape – a quite popular fruit, often found in the land of cherry blossoms with the nickname “Japanese chocolate grape”.
The reason for this name is because when Akebi trees bloom, they emit a scent similar to the smell of chocolate.
This fruit has the appearance of a purple mango or light purple sweet potato. The inside is opaque white and contains many black seeds similar to passion fruit.
Initially, only the Hokkaido region – the coldest place in Japan – could grow this plant. After that, it gradually expanded to China, the Korean peninsula, and was then grown in the Eastern United States, from the states of Georgia to Michigan and Massachusetts.
However, even though it is a “hybrid” between mango, banana and passion fruit, its taste is sweet with a bit of bitterness.
For a long time, Japanese people have known how to take advantage of Akebi fruit peels to make many delicious dishes such as mixing salads, grilling, rolling in fried dough, stuffing braised meat, salting pickles, and the intestines can be used to make jam.
Meanwhile, the seeds are also extracted into essential oil and the leaves of the Akebi tree are used to make delicious tea.
