A rare breed of chicken in Indonesia famous because everything in their body, from their blood, tongue to comb, is black. Their price can be up to 2,500 USD.
Black is not a rare color in the animal world. Some species such as bears, gorillas, dogs or cats are also black. But a breed of chicken with black covering its entire body is a different story.
Speaking of this, surely many people will think of the evil chicken breed, but this breed of chicken is many times more precious and expensive than the evil chicken.
This breed of chicken originates from Indonesia, in China it is called “metal chicken” , in Vietnam it is called “devil face” chicken because of its quite aggressive face.
The devil-faced chicken not only has feathers and meat, but its comb, beak, internal organs… are also black, even its eggs are black.
This chicken is called the “devil-faced” chicken because it has a rather aggressive face.
In Indonesia, black chickens are considered mascots to ward off bad luck for the homeowner. In China and Vietnam, there are currently many people hunting for this breed of chicken as an ornamental treasure.
This is one of the rare animals infected with a pigment disorder syndrome that scientists commonly call fibromelanosis, along with the black silkie dog breed, Vietnamese black mongoose chickens and Swedish Svarthöna chickens.
Leif Andersson, a geneticist at Uppsala University, Sweden, said the special color of this chicken species is due to the complex arrangements of its genome. This originates from a species of bird that is believed to have existed hundreds, even thousands of years ago.
“The underlying mutation that causes fibromelanosis is very specific, so we are sure that it happened once in the past ,” Andersson said.
The disadvantage of this breed is that it has very poor reproductive ability, the vitality of chickens under 1 week old is only 50%. Due to the high cost of raising livestock and its relative rarity, this breed of chicken has a very high price.
The rare and expensive Ayam Cemani chicken breed originates from the Indonesian island of Java. In 1998, this species of black cock was first introduced in Europe by a Dutch breeder. Here, they quickly attracted significant interest from experts, genetic researchers and the public, especially poultry enthusiasts due to their appearance and genetic makeup. It was later raised in the Netherlands, Belgium, Germany, Slovakia, the Czech Republic and some Asian countries.
They “traveled” to Europe in 1998. In Indonesian, the word “Ayam” means “chicken” and “Cemani” means “completely black”.
Ayam Cemani’s feathers, beak, tongue, legs, and toenails are all jet black. Even their flesh, blood and bone marrow are black.
According to scientists, fibromelanosis in the chicken’s body promotes the growth of black pigment cells. Ayam Cemani is so strange that it is also called “Avian Lamborghini supercar”.
Ayam Cemani is one of the most expensive chicken breeds in the world with prices up to 2,500 USD/chicken (equivalent to more than 50 million VND).
In Asian countries, people believe that Ayam Cemani chicken meat is good for women before and after giving birth.
Many people even believe that Ayam Cemani brings luck and their crowing brings prosperity.
Although “black inside and out” , this chicken species lays cream or brown eggs – the only thing that is not black. If you wonder why the price of an Ayam Cemani chicken is so expensive, the answer is quite easy to understand. In fact, this species of chicken is very difficult to lay eggs. A year, they only lay about 80 fruits. Thanks to the appearance and quality of delicious meat that is sought after by many people, the price is also pushed up.
The taste of this black cock is described as not much different from regular chicken, but has a slightly saltier taste and softer texture. In addition, their meat contains many antioxidants that help protect eyesight, and has lower cholesterol content. Thanks to that, this is one of the healthy options.
