“The underlying mutation that causes fibromelanosis is very specific, so we are sure that it happened once in the past ,” Andersson said.

The disadvantage of this breed is that it has very poor reproductive ability, the vitality of chickens under 1 week old is only 50%. Due to the high cost of raising livestock and its relative rarity, this breed of chicken has a very high price.

The rare and expensive Ayam Cemani chicken breed originates from the Indonesian island of Java. In 1998, this species of black cock was first introduced in Europe by a Dutch breeder. Here, they quickly attracted significant interest from experts, genetic researchers and the public, especially poultry enthusiasts due to their appearance and genetic makeup. It was later raised in the Netherlands, Belgium, Germany, Slovakia, the Czech Republic and some Asian countries.

They “traveled” to Europe in 1998. In Indonesian, the word “Ayam” means “chicken” and “Cemani” means “completely black”.

Ayam Cemani’s feathers, beak, tongue, legs, and toenails are all jet black. Even their flesh, blood and bone marrow are black.

According to scientists, fibromelanosis in the chicken’s body promotes the growth of black pigment cells. Ayam Cemani is so strange that it is also called “Avian Lamborghini supercar”.

Ayam Cemani is one of the most expensive chicken breeds in the world with prices up to 2,500 USD/chicken (equivalent to more than 50 million VND).
